Graduate Program Funding and Scholarships
Non-Departmental Funding
Information on non-departmental additional scholarship opportunities, such as the Competitive Graduate Award, the Graduate Scholar Award, and the James Walker Graduate Scholarships, can be found on the Graduate School's web site.
If you are interested in pursuing a career in teaching or administration at an Illinois post-secondary institution or Illinois higher education governing board, check out the Diversifying Higher Education Faculty in Illinois program. There is also scholarship information available from AEESP.
Awards for Postdoctoral and Senior Researchers
The National Research Council of the National Academies sponsors a number of awards for postdoctoral and senior researchers at federal laboratories. These awards provide generous stipends – $41,000 - $70,000 per year for recent PhD recipients and higher for additional experience – and the opportunity to do independent research in some of the best-equipped and staffed laboratories in the country. Detailed program information, including instructions on how to apply online, and a list of participating laboratories is available on the NRC Research Associateship Programs website.
Departmental Graduate Assistantships
Full-time, classified graduate students in good standing may apply for a graduate assistantship within the department. Awards are made on a competitive basis as positions become available. Typically, only one or two new positions are available each year. Criteria include but are not limited to:
- relevant professional experience
- undergraduate record in relevant courses
- graduate record in relevant courses
- GRE scores of at least:
- 85 percent on the quantitative portion
- 50 percent on the analytical portion
- 50 percent on the verbal portion
- English testing score for international students (e.g., at least 250 for the TOEFL)
- area of study (For example, if a position is open for an environmental engineering course, an environmental engineering student will be sought.).
In addition to scholarship, promise of outstanding academic, research, and professional achievement is taken into consideration.
To be considered for an assistantship, you must have been accepted for or enrolled in graduate study at the time of the selection process. Graduate assistants must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and meet all Graduate School eligibility requirements, including course enrollment criteria.
Renewal of an assistantship is dependent on continuing to meet eligibility requirements, satisfactory performance of assigned duties, and adequate funding. The supervisor has the right to terminate a GA for failure to meet eligibility requirements, unsatisfactory performance, or inadequate funding.
To obtain an assistantship application, do one of the following:
- contact the Department of Civil Engineering, Box 1800, SIUE, Edwardsville, Illinois, 62026-1800
- call 618-650-2533
- go to Application for Teaching or Research Assistantship
Send the completed application plus any supporting material directly to the Department of Civil Engineering at the address above or e-mail them to Ms. Jeanie Umbaugh at [email protected]. All applications are kept on file.
If you want to be considered in a subsequent semester, regardless if you hold a current assistantship from the Department, you need to send e-mail to Ms. Jeanie Umbaugh at [email protected] to inform the department of your interest before the application deadline. If your original application and supporting materials are already on file, you do not need to resubmit them.
