Faculty and Staff Fellows
The Faculty and Staff Fellows program is a collaborative effort between University Housing and Academic Affairs to intentionally connect residents with faculty and staff outside of the classroom. Research has shown that the more contact that occurs between faculty and students both inside and outside the classroom, the more likely students are to develop in college and to be satisfied with their college experience (Astin, 1993). Student development and satisfaction are in direct accordance with the SIUE Academic Affairs Imperative of Student Success and consequently retention.
Additional benefits include:
- Serving as a Faculty Fellow is considered a university service that counts toward promotion/tenure/5th unit workload.
- Improved teaching methods from gaining a better understanding of today's college students.
- Opportunities to share research with students and potentially recruit undergraduate research assistants.
The expectations for Faculty and Staff Fellows are:
- Host 2-4 meetups, fireside chats, or other programs each semester.
- Maintain regular contact with the Community Director for your assigned area.
- Try to attend at least one in-person RA staff meeting, staff development, or large program.
Fellows assigned to a Focused Interest Community (FIC) should make sure at least one of these is specific to the FIC theme.
