New Faculty Incentive Program
The New Faculty Incentive Program (NFIP) is intended to jumpstart the scholarly activities of new tenure-track faculty while encouraging the pursuit of external sources of funding to support their scholarly agendas. This program will provide new faculty with an incentive award of up to $2,000 for submitting a proposal to an external sponsor.
Definition of Research
Research is broadly defined as all creative, critical, scholarly, and/or empirical activity that expands, clarifies, reorganizes, or develops knowledge or artistic perception. This definition of research includes:
- the demonstration, implementation, application and dissemination of research results
- the scholarship of discovery, application, integration and teaching.
This definition of research does not include:
- departmental curriculum development, faculty development (learning an established technique, a language, or a methodology)
- dissertation research
- institutional research (studies related directly to the operation of the University)
- public service and consulting activities.
Eligibility
This award is limited to tenured and tenure-track faculty at the rank of 1) assistant professor, 2) associate professor, 3) clinical professor, or professor who are within the first two years of their appointment at SIUE at the time of application. The terminal degree must have already been obtained. Faculty who are interested in submitting through SIUE before their official start date will need to contact the Director of Grant Development before applying. Recipients are eligible for only one incentive award.
Award Description
The amount of the incentive award will be based upon a sliding scale as detailed in the table below.

Terms and Conditions of Award
The following conditions must be met in order to receive approval for funding·
- You must be eligible at the time of the proposal submission.
- You must be PI or Co-PI on the external submission with an established researcher who is not eligible for NFIP in the external proposal. Participating as key personnel will not meet the requirements of this program.
- You must participate in a mandatory meeting with the Director of Grant Development or designated pre-award staff to discuss plans for your external submission.
- You must continue to work with ORP Pre-Award staff until the submission is completed.
- Your submission must be routed through Kuali Research and meet the 10-business day deadline.
- Your proposal must be submitted to and accepted for review by the sponsor.
- Student and Faculty Internships/Fellowships or primarily professional development activities will not qualify as an external submission. Faculty Fellowships that are scholarship or research focused will qualify as an external submission.
- Proposals containing 50% or more in-kind support or other cost share will qualify for only a $1,000 award regardless of the total direct cost of the proposal.
- You must register in GrantForward and create a researcher profile prior to the external submission. Note that (a) you must fill out the biography information (even though it is marked as optional in GrantForward), and (b) if you need to edit your profile on GrantForward, it is easy to delete your biography. After editing your profile, always double check that your biography is there by exiting and logging back in to check your profile.
- You must subscribe to ORP News prior to the external submission.
- The recipient may submit more than one eligible proposal and choose the one with the highest incentive award. Once a proposal has been chosen, the decision is final, and the recipient is no longer eligible for the program.
Once the Kuali Build application has fully routed and been approved, the funds will be transferred to the academic department or school/college of the recipient to be used for eligible expenses.

- Summer salary (cannot incur overload; note that fringe benefits may have to be covered)
- Travel
- Equipment
- Supplies/commodities
- Contractual services (including publication and production costs)
Application Process
Applications are only accepted through the Kuali Build New Faculty Incentive Fund application. You may begin the application at any time and save it for completion at a later date. Required documents (i.e., screenshot of email receipt of ORP News issue and verification of acceptance of your proposal for review by the sponsor) must be uploaded as a single PDF document.
