After numerous clinical service trips with ER Abroad to the Land of Hope, a remote village in Gautemala, Bernadette Sobczak, DNP, assistant professor, and Greg Jennings, DNP, instructor, set out to provide greater continuity of care for its children. They partnered with Frank Lyerla, PhD, associate professor and director of the healthcare informatics program, to develop and implement a telehealth program. The initiative provides pediatric telehealth services for more than 40 children in and around the Land of Hope, which was built by the not-for-profit organization BuildinGUATE and includes a medical clinic, school, multipurpose building, community kitchen and 19 cinder block houses. “In Guatemala, if you live past age five there’s a good chance you’ll live a good long life,” Sobczak said. “The Land of Hope provides a daily fortified formula to help reduce the rate of chronic malnutrition, but many children have underlying conditions or parasites that prevent them from thriving. By tracking their health and providing telehealth visits, we can now diagnose and treat these children consistently.” |

The School of Nursing recognized 32 nurse anesthesia doctoral candidates with a White Coat Ceremony in March. The registered nurses from the Midwest region are specializing in the practice of nurse anesthesia and will graduate in 2024 as the School's seventh cohort of doctorally-prepared nurse anesthesiologists. “The impetus for developing this ceremony came from the desire to recognize the hard work our nurse anesthesia doctoral candidates put into preparing for their clinical training in anesthesia,” said Kevin Stein, DNAP, CRNA, chair of the Department of Nurse Anesthesiology. “These students spent four years preparing to become registered nurses, have worked at the bedside in critical care units providing for the needs of their patients, and have completed the first year of didactic study in their doctoral training. They are now prepared to enter the clinical setting to begin practicing anesthesia.” |
